Content Driven SEO Should be your First Priority

Search engine robots cannot see flash websites. If you’ve spent a whole bunch of time and money creating something that looks pretty but has no HTML or quality content, you are about to launch something that will put you out of business in a relatively short period of time. Flash banners are nice, but entire websites? That is a big mistake.

The algorithms used to determine your page rank consider what you have to say, not what your website looks like to the naked human eye. Those creative color combinations and cool moving images don’t mean anything to the spiders that see only letters and numbers. They might index the site if you remembered to put a title tag in, but you’ll never achieve any kind of high page rank with it.

If you’re planning on getting natural or organic traffic of any kind, you’ll need to write quality content and meta descriptions. This should be your first priority, not an afterthought. Far too many designers spend time creating sites that look good instead of sites with substance that will rank. This is often a fatal mistake that could have been avoided with some simple planning in the early design stages.

When designing a website, begin with a keyword search to see which of your industry keywords are getting traffic and incorporate them into your content. If you don’t know how to do that, hire a content writing service. After the content is written, place those same keywords into meta title tags and descriptions that are clear and concise. Think like a machine. Subtleties and pretty pictures aren’t going to impress an automated search spider.

Once your content and meta data is ready, come up with a simple design that will be pleasing to the eye but also give your visitors direction. You’d be surprised how much more effective basic is than extravagant. User studies have shown that many feel that crowded and busy websites with lots of graphics either hurt their eyes or actually distract them from making a purchase, two reactions not conducive to you being successful.

Once you have written your content and meta tags, choose a simple but effective design, and put it all together on a website that is attached to a relevant domain name. At that point, you can start the search engine optimization process. Begin by submitting your site to all the search engines, DMOZ, and as many PR-2 and above directories as you can find. If it’s a blog, register it with blog directories and burn RSS feeds to connect to a Twitter account. That should get you some attention.
